AK‐1012 Keyboard
The Leading Edge AK−1012 was a full−size mechanical keyboard associated with Leading Edge computer systems in the early 1990s. Featuring a traditional 101−key layout, it offered the tactile feedback and audible clicking characteristic of mechanical keyboards of the period. The AK−1012 uses Futaba MA−series clicky switches, with most keys fitted with white switches mounted in Cherry MX−style housings. Although white−switch versions are documented, variants of the AK−1012 equipped with Alps SKCM White switches also exist. The keyboard's straightforward layout and sturdy construction made it a practical input device for everyday computing.
The AK−1012's Futaba MA switches provide a distinct typing experience, with a specified actuation force of approximately 65 grams and a tactile point at 60 grams. The space bar is an exception, using a dark gray switch with a stiffer spring and a specified keypress force of 70 grams, while retaining the same 60−gram tactile point. Both switch types are clicky, producing audible feedback during typing. The keycaps feature legends applied using a transfer−paper printing method, in which a very thin printed sticker is attached to the keycap surface. This differs from more durable double−shot molding and other methods in which legends are integrated into the keycap itself.
The keyboard features a conventional 101−key, Windows−keyless layout, with a separate numeric keypad, dedicated function keys, and a cluster of navigation keys. Its integrated controller is an Intel P8049AH microcontroller, and the keyboard connects through a PS/2−style interface. The upper−left portion of the case carries the Leading Edge logo, positioned above and between the Escape and F1 keys. The logo consists of the company's distinctive blue, white, and red triple−triangle emblem alongside the LEADING EDGE name in uppercase lettering. For users who prefer an inclined typing position, the underside incorporates folding feet that extend the rear height from 1.5 inches to approximately 2.25" . The feet fold into recessed areas in the bottom of the case and have black rubber strips at their ends.
In terms of physical dimensions, the AK−1012 measures approximately 18.5" long, 7.5" wide, and 1.5" high with its feet folded. With the feet fully extended, its height increases to 2.25" . The keyboard weighs 3lbs, 6oz, giving it a substantial feel without making it unusually cumbersome for a full−size desktop keyboard. Its coiled cable has a resting length of approximately 44" , helping accommodate a typical desktop arrangement while keeping excess cable relatively contained. The light−colored case, contrasting gray modifier keys, and blue status−indicator panel give the keyboard an appearance consistent with computer peripherals of its time.
The AK−1012 is also identifiable through its Federal Communications Commission registration. FCC ID JJEAK−1012S is associated with Amico Corporation, which registered the keyboard under equipment product code AK−1012S on December 19, 1991. This registration provides a useful historical reference for identifying the hardware and establishing its manufacturer. With its traditional layout, mechanical Futaba switches, dedicated numeric keypad, and recognizable Leading Edge branding, the AK−1012 represents a period when full−size mechanical keyboards were common part of desktop computing. Today, it remains an interesting piece of Leading Edge hardware for vintage−computer enthusiasts, mechanical keyboard enthusiasts, and collectors documenting the company's computer systems and accessories.
