Leading Edge Word Processing Program
Leading Edge Word Processing was a word processing software suite designed for Leading Edge computer
users and when released in 1984 included a master disk which contained the programs to run Leading
Edge Word Processing, the Tutorial Utility Disk ‐ which had short lessons for printing
and word processing, and a spelling disk that had an abridged dictionary for spell
checking. In addition to the expected software, the package included an install
guide, warranty registration card, a user guide to operating the software, a
QRC, a keyboard overlay template and a set of circular Velcro pieces to hold down the overlay
onto the keyboard.
The software was contained on three 5.25" 360 KB disks. The disks all sported large red labels with the Leading Edge logo prominently featured on the left. To the right of the label on each disk was the text in white indicating each disk as either, "WORD PROCESSING MASTER DISK, WORD PROCESSING TUTORIAL & UTILITIES DISK, AND WORD PROCESSING SPELLING DISK". All three disks came with their own sleeves with a triangular hash‐pattern with the Leading Edge logo in the center and "LEADING EDGE" text at the very bottom. Both the master disk and spelling disk had a unique serial number to each disk.
Leading Edge Word Processing required at least 256K of available RAM to run and function properly. The software generally was targeting IBM XT compatible PC users. Upon loading the software, the user was greeted by a large ASCI Leading Edge triangle, and the usual legalities with a "press any key to continue" prompt. Once inside the user interface, the user saw a rather basic but functional interface that had many of its most common functions at the bottom of the screen. Most users would have needed to either regularly reference the user manual or put the included keyboard overlay in place to get the most out of the software.
