MS‐DOS 5.0 was hailed as a glorious return to form after MS−DOS 4.0, which had a notorious reputation. Many OEM manufactures skipped out on including 4.0 as an operating system for their computers and Leading Edge Products was no exception to this trend. Leading Edge, like so many other OEM manufactures, instead opted to wait until the release of MS−DOS 5.0 that addressed many of the issues brought about by MS−DOS 4.0 before moving on from previous versions of MS−DOS. MS−DOS 5.0 addressed the issues of MS−DOS 4.0 with bug fixes and introduced new features such as significantly improved memory management.

As a broader trend in the industry, manufactures bundled operating systems with their hardware to provide a more integrated and user‐friendly experience. Released in 1990, Windows 3.0 was a significant breakthrough success for Microsoft. The manual describes Windows 3.0 as, "the software that transforms the way you use your personal computer". Microsoft indicated to users that Windows 3.0 had the ability to run more than one application at a time and "transfer information between applications" while also being a more intuitive operating environment for the user. Leading Edge branded version of Windows 3.0 was a special edition bundled with some Leading Edge computers and was customized to work seamlessly with Leading Edge hardware with pre‐installed utilities.

windows 3.1

Windows 3.1, released in 1992, offered several enhancements over its predecessor, Windows 3.0. Some such enhancements included new fonts, better help, and multimedia capabilities. The Leading Edge Branded Windows 3.1 was a version of Windows 3.1 that was licensed to Leading Edge by Microsoft to be factory preinstalled on certain models of computers offered by Leading Edge. The Leading Edge Windows 3.1 manual says, "Just as the 1980s saw the PC revolution, the 1990s are seeing the Windows revolution".
