An unused book on a shelf, sitting in the same place for decades, can accumulate a surprising amount of filth and grime during its lifetime. Even during the time−period in which the book was frequently referenced, it picks up scuffs and dirt from daily handling, especially if the book is bound using a fabric−covered cardboard solution. Here in this short restoration article, we made attempts at different cleaning methods to see which resulted in the best outcome, both for minimizing damage to the piece and cleaning off as much filth and dirt as possible. This not only cleans this one item, but gives us insight into the best method going forward and shares the knowledge with others who may have similar manuals that require attention.
